Fiji Accommodation Guide
All tourists arrive on the main island of Viti Levu, the majority landing at Nadi International Airport on the west coast. Nadi Airport, a small tourist town which sprawls from the airport to the town centre about 5km inland from the coast, is the dry side of the island and makes an excellent base for exploring. There's a good selection of restaurants in Nadi and numerous day tours available from Shotover Jet to island hopping to orchid gardens. There are plenty of mid size hotels and budget hostels along the main Nadi road and a few small beach resorts in Nadi Bay, although the beach there is not great. The large Sheraton Resort is at Denarau Island, connected by land bridge. Nadi Airport is also an ideal base for day excursions to the tiny offshore islands and for exploring the nearby mountains.
An hours drive to the south is the Coral Coast where many resorts have fine stretches of sandy beach. There's a small town at Sigatoka, a few independent restaurants at Korotogo and lots of attractions including a cultural museum, wild sandunes and waterfall treks. There are a number of large resorts along the Coral Coast which are great for family vacations as well as a selection of guesthouses and backpacker hostels.
Beyond the Coral Coast is the community of Pacific Harbour and the capital city of Suva. Pacific Harbour has several resorts, independent restaurants and a championship golf course set at the foot of stunning rainforested mountains and is a great centre for exploring with several river and village tours into the interior as well as a large cultural centre. There are several dive, surf and fishing operators based at Pacific Harbour serving the excellent Beqa Reef. Suva is a sprawling cosmopolitan city with an attractive harbour but no beach. Most accommodation in Suva is self catering apartments and business hotels.
The Sunshine Coast in Viti Levu's north is the least developed region for tourism on the main island and offers some great exploring opportunities. There are no white sandy beaches along this coastline although Nananu-i-Ra, a small offshore island, has some very nice white sandy beaches and is very relaxing with just one small Deluxe resort and a few small backpacker guesthouses.
Unfortunately Suva does not have a beach so there is little tourist infrastructure, rather several large and small hotels catering for business people.
Fiji's most popular vacation destination is the Western Islands. The Mamanuca Group is a compact collection of small islands and coral atolls between 5 and 10 miles off the Nadi coast. There are about 20 Fiji-style resorts here, most of them being medium-sized (50-100 bungalows, some with thatch roofs = bure) and catering to package holidays. The Mamanuca Group is a great place to go and unwind and to enjoy the excellent water activities from water-skiing, surfing, sailing, parasailing, fishing, scuba diving and island hopping. The Mamanuca Group can easily be visited on day tours from Nadi and several small islands and island hopping cruises cater exclusively for this market making this a good option for those on a budget or 3-day stopover. Extending north from the Mamanuca Group is the Yasawa Group. This chain of small volcanic islands has some fantastic sweeping beaches, turquoise lagoons and isolated traditional fishing villages. It has become a favourite as a backpacker circuit with lots of budget beach bungalows, as well as being the venue for Deluxe cruise / sailing itineraries and home to three of Fiji's most exclusive small resorts, but nothing in-between.
The most popular scuba diving destination in Fiji is the Rainbow Reef in the Northern Islands (Rainbow Reef). This 32-km coral reef has excellent crevices and soft corals and is easily assessible from the southern coast of Vanua Levu and from Taveuni. Vanua Levu, although being the second largest island in Fiji, is not greatly developed for tourism and the small resorts mostly focus exclusively to divers and are tucked away in quiet locations. Taveuni is more developed for tourism with several excellent National Parks, nice beach locations, good public transport, several independant restaurants and some organized day tours, thus appealling more to the general traveller.
The Southern Islands has great surfing and game fishing as well as excellent scuba diving along the Astralobe Reef with its marine life and caves. Kadavu is the third largest island in Fiji and has most of the regions resorts. Kadavu is a rugged island with few roads and pristine tropical rainforests with some unique birdlife. Most of the resorts are assessible only by boat, making this a good choice for those wanting to experience total isolation.
The Eastern Islands have only of places to stay. Most of these are in the Lomaiviti Group which sits just off the east coast of Viti Levu and is assessible by boat or plane. Ovalau, a mountainous tropical island with the historical old capital, has several budget hostels and guesthouses and caters to the ecotourist market. There are also a few offshore islands with small Deluxe resorts as well as a couple of backpacker hang-outs. Scuba diving here is good. The remote Lau Group has a coupe of guesthouse accommodation only.
